The August 28, lunar eclipse observing session began for me close to 05:45 ADT (08:45 UT). A good amount of thin cloud and haze was present above the western horizon which made it difficult to observe the Full Moon’s first contact with the umbra (Earth’s dark inner shadow). Fortunately the sky seemed clearer in the 5° still separating the Moon and the horizon, so I patiently waited for a photo moment.  The results are shared here.  Atmospheric extinction and the rising western horizon hastened totality.

Above is the first photo in the sequence that I was able to take.  The cloud cover began to thin enough to show that the edge of Earth’s shadow was obscuring the Moon more than was the cloud.
