TIDAL BORE SCHEDULE
TIDAL BORE SCHEDULE
SCHEDULE for TIDES along the southerly shores of the MINAS BASIN and at WINDSOR, N.S. and TIDAL BORE Predictions at
*TIDAL VIEW FARM at Poplar Grove - Miller Creek,
*MANTUA, from bridge over Herbert River. also overlooks St Croix River
*North of SCOTCH VILLAGE, the bridge over Kennetcook River
Includes a simple and, calculation as a guide for the bore time at
*South Maitland and Truro
Please Note: Predictions will return April 2012 if you need a prediction read the following or contact Sherm (Sherman Williams).
MAY 2012 prediction schedule (pdf) correction made May 6
One can get a good prediction for the tidal bore at Mantua Bridge by adding 4 hours to a low tide time at Windsor. A Windsor tide predictor link is provided below. It gives Windsor tide for the 2 days on which you make the first hit to the site. Once you get the current tide chart, scroll down a bit and you will see that the site will let you enter a different date for tide prediction. The bore prediction you make with the +4hours will get you on the bridge about 10 or 15 minutes early. (One should always arrive a little early)

Actual sighting of the incoming tide (when the tidal bore forms), can be 15 minutes (or more) later than predicted, or possibly 10 minutes earlier, depending on weather, wind, river outflow and strength of tide. It is a good idea to arrive at least 15 minutes earlier than the predicted time.
All tides produce a distinct reversal of current in the river channel, but only stronger tides (usually in a range exceeding 10 to 12 metres or more) show a definite wave front, marking the start of the incoming tide as it proceeds up river. The wave front produced is called a tidal bore. A Minas Basin tide range close to 14 metres, or better, produces the best tidal bore. Deeper water from runoff following heavy rains and from snowmelt or where the channel is deep usually reduces the tidal bore effect.
The predicted times for the tidal bore on the St Croix River as it comes into view from the viewing site at Tidal View Farm (TVF) (GPS 45° 00’ 38.6” N, 64° 04’ 23.1” W) , and as viewed from the bridge on Avondale Rd going to Mantua (MB) (GPS 44° 59’ 40” N, 64° 02’ 19.5” W), just off Route 14, both sites are near Windsor, Hants County, N.S. The TVF bore happens about 40 minutes before the bore at MB. LOW and HIGH tide times are given for the Avon River at Windsor, N.S. These predicted times can vary approximately 10 to 15 minutes (+/-10 or 15 min) earlier or later than the actual event. Tide range given in these schedules, is the vertical rise in tide height, from LOW water to HIGH water, typical of Minas Basin and in the Avon River at Windsor.

NOTE There is approximately a tidal bore twice per 24-hour-day, however, the predictions here are for those which arrive during the most convenient daylight hours
(times given are Atlantic Daylight-saving Time).

A tidal bore happens approximately 2 times each day. In the SIMPLIFIED schedule only the tides that give the significant daytime tidal bore have been selected . The Red tide height indicates the strongest tides which produce a more pronounced tidal bore.
Tidal View Farm at Poplar Grove - Miller Creek, about 3.5 km northwest of Mantua bridge (GPS 45° 00’ 38.6” N, 64° 04’ 23.1” W). Another good tidal bore occurs on the Kennetcook River about 1 hour later than Tidal View Farm OR about 20 minutes after the bore at Mantua bridge. It can be seen from the bridge, north of Scotch Village, off highway #236, (GPS 45° 03’ 47.5” N, 64° 00’ 17.7” W). It is approximately a 12 minutes drive northeast from Mantua Bridge to the community of Scotch Village. In the village look for the sign, North River Road, turn north. Just beyond the rise is the bridge.
Please note: these predictions are made available through a volunteered effort. The schedule is based on tide predicting software and a number of actual observations made at regular intervals. A good effort is made to see that the schedule is as free from errors as possible, and will provide a reliable guide.
