Six Impossible Things Before Breakfast (L. Carroll)
The oldest child of the oldest child of the oldest child, I was born in Raleigh,NC and there I stayed (more or less) until my early twenties.
I got my B.S.in Chemistry from North Carolina State before moving all the way to Chapel Hill for my Ph.D. in Bioinorganic Chemistry under H. Holden Thorp (now the Chancellor of UNC). After that, I spent a year in Amherst, MA at Amherst College learning protein chemistry as a post-doc with Joan Broderick and hiking the Seven Sisters in the Pioneer Valley. I moved with Joan to Michigan State University and, after a year, joined the research group of John McCracken to learn pulsed-EPR techniques. In 2001, I was hired into my current position as professor of chemistry in the Department of Natural Sciences at the University of Michigan- Dearborn where I was recently promoted to Associate, with full tenure.
My research involves the roles that transition metals, specifically copper and iron, play in biological systems.
I adopted my dog Ginger in 2005 from the Dearborn Animal Shelter. I think she’s mostly American Foxhound. In the summer, we can be found (if you can find us) hiking, biking, camping, boating and/or inline skating. In the winter, we like to play in the snow.
That’s only four things and mostly not impossible, but that’s all I’ve got for now.
