Continuing from the last Core exercise from a few months ago (ok so I am a little behind) we are progressing to a 2 point core activation.

To start get on your hands and knees with your hands directly below your shoulders, and your knees directly below your hips then extend one hand and the opposite leg as shown in the 1st diagram. Remember to keep the spine in line, and the head neutral with the eyes looking down.

Draw a deep breath in allowing the abdomen to distend without losing the spine posture.

Slowly breathe out and contract your Transversus abdominus pulling the bellybutton towards the spine. Blow all the air out slowly, hold and slowly inhale and repeat. Do this 5 - 10 times taking 20 seconds per cycle.
Well, the Rock n Roll Marathon was held on June 3rd in sunny San Diego (although the cloudy skies that day were very welcome) and your friendly neighborhood chiropractor was among the 17+ thousand participants. Get this, I even finished! It was one heck of an adventure, and the inner dialogue that you go through when putting your body through something like that really lets you know what you are made of. I didn’t make my goal time of 4:15 minutes, but i know i have it in me to get that or better with the next one I do. Yup there will be more.

i ran in my Adrenaline Gt6’s with the custom made orthotics in them and really didn’t think about my feet the whole run. I do have to say I was pretty happy with finishing, and have a great appreciation and amazement towards those who run them frequently and quickly. In case you were wondering, the winner ran it in 2:09 which averages to 26.2 miles at 4:45 minutes per mile, which is completely insane!!!

The race was really well organized. We received timing chips to tie to our shoes so big brother could track our every move. But it was nice to see that the chip time reflected our time from start line to finish line not from the time the gun sounded to when we finished. With all those people it took close to five minutes to actually get to the starting line.

They had a huge expo the two days prior to the race where every possible vendor that had anything to do with running had a stand set up selling their stuff and giving out lots of free samples. I love free samples --we got just about every kind of energy bar ever made, so needless to say we weren’t very hungry for dinner.

I had a great time and am really thankful to Spring for getting me into this new obsession.
I’ll post more pics from the race in my next edition.

Stay Active!!
Shawn

Oh, if you want to look up the official event you can check out the Rock N Roll Marathon Website

Despite my better judgement I went out in the rain and ran the race. I am so glad I did. This being my first race, I was truly impressed by what a great group of people runners are. Everyone was cheering each other on in an “I know what you are going through but hang on you are doing great!” way. I met Chip a Loudoun Road Runner who encouraged me to join their group on their outings. And Dr. Eugene Su a fellow Chiropractor practicing in Reston, with plans on moving his practice to Ashburn. He had a great run in the 5k winning his age group.

Best of all following the race the AKS massage therapy school was there giving recovery sports massages to all the athletes who wanted them.

Here are links to the results pages:
for the 5k
and for the half marathon

This was a great test for me in my quest to survive a full marathon in June. But I know that i have a lot of running to do between now and then.

I have entered the Leesburg LAWS Half Marathon. It is scheduled for tomorrow the 15th, and the weather report looks terrible.
The race is to benefit the Loudoun Abused Women’s Shelter. And it looks like there is going to be a good turnout. There is also a 5K race as well for those sprinters and fun runners out there. (Good Luck Fred!) I will post results or a link to the results here.
