12/05/07:   As you can see from the photo journal, I’ve had a chance to return to the Lutheran School several times, and I met with Guadalupe, the director, in  Sep, Oct, and Nov, to bring more donations and funds to continue our support of his project.  I also bought more handiwork items from the women of the church to sell at my concerts, and for other churches to sell for a profit, and have given them the extra funds from these sales.  With some of our surplus funds from the mission, we contracted to complete the classroom roof we began in July, and a new set of bathrooms for the school.  The roof is finished (and doesn’t leak!), the classrooms are painted and being used again, and the bathrooms should be finished before Christmas.  I am monitoring this progress, and will post updates later.  The place really looks great.  They have been great stewards of our post-mission resources.

Since documenting over 70 children for sponsorship during the mission, Marla Dixon and Christ the Shepherd Lutheran Church in Ortonville, MI, have started a child sponsorship program.  As of today, they have secured 36 sponsors, Praise Be to God!  Next week I am meeting with Guadalupe to give him another check from these sponsorships, and some letters for the children from their sponsors in the States.  Guadalupe is also incredibly grateful for our help, and we are planning to return to help the Colegio with another mission next summer.

12/05/07: Although I’ve not had a chance to personally return to Coban, I’ve kept in close contact with Rosita, the director, and she just sent me these photos. I met with her in Sep, Oct, and Nov, and have brought more donations and funds to continue our support of her project. With some of our surplus funds from the mission, we contracted two new sets of bathrooms for the school. I am monitoring this progress and hope to post more photos when I receive them. Since documenting all 120 children for sponsorship during the mission, Sara Townsend and Victory Lutheran Church in Mesa, AZ, have started a child sponsorship program. As of today, they have secured 23 sponsors, Praise Be to God! This week I gave Rosita a check from these sponsorships, and a suitcase full of Christmas gifts for the children from their sponsors in the States. She is incredibly grateful, and we are planning to return to help Rosa De Amor with another mission next summer.

Shawn Smith has had the opportunity to return to Guatemala several times following the summer mission to meet with the project hosts, deliver more donations and funds, administrate continuing work projects, help establish and coordinate the sponsorship programs, and take photos.  Here are some updates...

12/05/07: As you can see from the photo journal, I’ve had a chance to return to the Hogar Miguel several times, and I met with Karen, the director, in Sep, Oct, and Nov, to bring more donations and funds to continue our support of her project, and especially to document progress on the chapel and store. With some of our surplus funds from the mission, we contracted to complete the chapel we began in July--especially focussing on the roof and floor. The roof is finished, the tile is purchased, and the new floor and windows should be installed by Christmas. I am monitoring this progress, and will post updates later. Lorenzo, the master builder, had slow progress in the fall due to other commitments, and needing to custom build the unique roof. I was most impressed, and most relieved, that the converted “old chapel” is now a fully functioning, fully organized store, and there’s not one piece of clothing or un-sorted donation on the floor anymore! They have been great stewards of this gift, and Karen has expressed her deep appreciation for our help.
We will most likely continue our help in the New Year by bringing more donations, and raising funds for teacher’s salaries, and purchasing silk-screened t-shirts, and small craft items made by the boys, and buying coffee that Hogar sells. I will post updates of how to help Hogar Miguel in these ways on our 2008 mission page.
