The Center at the dump is always very humbling.  It is right at the edge of the dump, so you can see tarps and tents set up where people are staying while they dig around looking for food, recyclables, anything to sell...  The children at this Center often lack shoes and clothes, and are infested with lice and/or scabies.  In the past, Celebrate Children International has delivered basic clothing needs, toiletries, and school supplies.  Read more about Jennifer Crist’s work with Celebrate Children in the blog.  There is so much to tackle at this site.  All crews will have a chance to visit this site.  We are hoping to provide antibacterial soap dispensers and soap to this Center to start addressing cleanliness.  We also hope to provide kits to  “Feed the Soul” and provide training on how to use them.  We will be creating kits with underwear, socks, some new toiletries, a Bible, a wound care kit, etc.  Upon delivery, the medical crew and cultural exchange crew will be discussing hygiene, teaching basic wound care, and giving spiritual support to these children.

The Center for Education and Recreation (Centro Educativo Recreativo), is located at one of Guatemala City’s many dumps.  There are literally thousands of children living and working at these dumps.  In the recent past, children have died or have been seriously injured due to the dangerous conditions.  The government has opened this center to take children ages 7 to 17 who were working in the dump out to a nursery each morning to learn to grow trees.  The government pays them an amount similar to what they would have made rummaging for recyclables at the dump.  Then in the afternoon, they go to this center for skill training and education.
