Tomorrow I’ll be meeting up with local moms to present a Plugged In Parent program. I’m expecting there to be lots of questions about Internet safety, and while I’ll try to address issues specific to the different needs of families with young kids and older kids, my suggestions for getting plugged into kids and technology will basically be the same for every age. Start a dialogue.
Parental control software and rating systems are great resources for families, and there are many free and easy ways to build a foundation for safety when kids are online. But one of the best ways to build awareness and keep kids from wandering into unsafe territory is to talk to them. Early. Frequently. Continually.
That’s what we’ll be doing tomorrow morning, at 9:30 a.m. in the Friendship Lounge of First Congregational Church of Wauwatosa. Join us for a meaty discussion and get some ideas on creating a solid dialogue with your kids before they log onto the Internet.
