On the Hill

Last week I had the opportunity to participate in a panel on Capitol Hill sponsored by the Freedom and Progress Foundation regarding the importance of Internet safety education.   You can read a quick recap of the event here.

I’ll admit that it was pretty amazing to be in D.C. speaking on something that I’ve spent almost three years researching and writing about. The best part was connecting with my new colleagues - Larry Magid, co-author of MySpace Unraveled, and Nancy Willard, cyberbully expert and author of Cyber-Safe Kids, Cyber-Savvy Teens.   After wading through my own experiences and deductions about how to keep families safe, educate folks about the Internet, and encourage parents to make decisions based on fact - not fear - it was fantastic to connect with like-minded professionals and hear about the influence they are having on informing and educating the public.

I got in trouble for taking this picture - the security woman asked me what I was taking a photo of...I said “The rug.”  But I guess I was really trying to capture the moment - an afternoon when I was reminded that a regular mom like me, with a message, can be heard in this country. Maybe even make a difference.

Just like the safety issues we face online, there will certainly be obstacles.  We can be fearful, scared, worried, critical and uninformed. Or we can make a difference. Join me?
