Four leading young Canadian musicians form this piano quartet. Each member of the quartet has been forging outstanding individual careers and they come together with a wealth of experience and a shared love of chamber music. The group consists of pianist Angela Park, violinist Judy Kang, violist Sharon Wei, and cellist Denise Djokic.
The players' chamber music backgrounds include performances at prestigious festivals such as Marlboro, Ravinia, Banff, Orford, Musique de Chambre a Normandie, Verbier, Prussia Cove, Pablo Casals, Ottawa Chamber Music Festival, Festival of the Sound, and Evian. They have collaborated with such musicians as Joseph Silverstein, Claude Frank, Gary Hoffman, Lawrence Lesser, Lorand Fenvyes, David Soyer, Gil Shaham, James Levine, Felix Galimir, Scott St. John, Rivka Golani and Lynn Harrell. Performances include appearances at Wigmore Hall, Lincoln Center, Steinway Society of Chicago, Glenn Gould's Music Around us Series, Phillips Collection, Montreal Debut Series, Dame Myra Hess Series, New York Viola Society, Mooredale Chamber Music Series, Syrinx Series, and Bargemusic. Many of their performances have been recorded and aired on CBC radio. After having played with each other in various other formations over the past ten years the four members have combined forces to study the piano quartet literature. Their programs also draw from the sonata, duo and trio repertoire.
All four members of the piano quartet have won major awards and prizes. Angela has been a grand prize-winner at the Grace Welsh International Piano competition in Chicago and the World Piano Competition, Judy captured the Grand Prize at the CBC Competition for Young Performers and top prizes at the Kreisler and Naumburg International Violin Competitions, Sharon has been a prizewinner at the Washington International Competition for Strings and was a National and Canadian Merit Scholar. Denise won an East Coast Music Award for “Best Classical Album of the year” and has been a featured performer at the Grammy Awards. The quartet was awarded a 2006 CBC Galaxie Rising Stars Award from the Banff Centre for the Arts where they had their debut concert.
They have pursued their studies on grants from the Canada Council, Alberta Council for the Arts, Winspear Foundation, Nova Scotia Talent Trust Award, and the Ontario Arts Council Chalmers Foundation. Judy performs on a 1689 « Baumgartner » Antonio Stradivarius, generously awarded by the Canada Council, Denise performs on a 1901 cello by Romeo Antoniazzi, and Sharon performs on a viola generously on loan to her from the Banff Centre.
This season the quartet will appear on series including Winnipeg’s Virtuosi series, London’s Aeolian Series, Lindsay Concert Productions, Syrinx Series in Toronto, Performing Arts York Region, Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber Music, Hart House Music, Baldwin Piano Concerts in Manitoba and University of Waterloo Noon Hour.
