The 4th Dimension
One of the ideas I am trying to bring into my artistic practice is a true sense of the 4th Dimension. To actually see the journey of the imagination as it takes form. The twists and turns, the trials and tribulations, the wonderful failures and spectacular successes.
To do this, one of the tools I am trying to implement is that of video through first using time lapse photography to show a step by step progression of the various stages of creation. Secondly, incorporate a digital journal for each piece the documents each stage. The thoughts and ideas that come to mind, relationships to real world events, choices in the direction my imagination decides to make at each fork in the road, and to explore the way an artist’s passion manifests itself. Thirdly, to create a ‘show’ to be viewed on the internet that will illustrate these ideas as they are happening. Each video will have two segments, of which Part I will be a description of my intent for the specific piece I am working on, and then Part II will be the implementation of that intent. The former will be available through a site like YouTube, and the latter will be available through this site via podcasts.
I am doing this to illustrate how an artists works. Most of us only see works of art in finished forms through books and galleries yet we never see the artist’s journey. The choices they make, the missteps and the A-HA moments.
I plan not to instill a heavy sense of technique and formalization within the process. That can be found on various other websites and books. Instead, what I am interested in is capturing the essence of the passion artists experience. That edge we each get to in the heat of the moment where we get a sense of the very frontier of the collective imagination projecting from our Civilization. The place artists explore deep into the Chaos of the Unknown, the Edge of the World, and bring back such wondrous visions of potential futures, not to mention the many probable nightmares, sharing these visions with all of us.
I believe this is an important aspect of who we are as humans, and desire to share my dreams and visions with you. It is why I am doing this.
