There are three different kinds of on-air types.

Disc Jockeys, Journeymen and Air Personality.

• The Disc Jockey: Plays and announces music, does the weather, reads liners, talks and gives away prizes.  You can make a good living being a disc jockey but with average skills you can be usurped quite easily by younger, cheaper talent.

• The Journeymen: Disc Jockeys who fill up space on a station to do the basics.  This includes fill-in, weekends and frequent moves.

  1. The Air Personality: Is bigger than the station he/she is employed at!  Popular, sought after by listeners, is requested to make appearances, draws a crowd.  The Air Personality is so dominant in their tenure that they get raises, promotions, profit shares, and are sought after by talent management companies and stations alike.

The following habits and techniques are the Top 10 of over 25 traits that will help you have a rewarding broadcast career as an air personality.

Learn the habits, memorize them, and refer to them frequently.  Practice three of these points everyday until they become second nature.

  1. “One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation.”

Arthur Ashe

Disc Jockeys have jobs.  Personalities have careers.
