Ms. Lubchenco

I graduated from Colorado College with a B.A. in a self-designed major of Environmental Science. After working as a research assistant at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama, a biologist for Oregon Fish and Wildlife, and a biologist and SCUBA diver for California Fish and Game, I decided it was time to share all the cool things I had learned. I received a teaching credential from Chapman College in 1984 and jumped into the saddle. What a great time I’ve had teaching, but learning must not stop. In 1994 I received a M.Sc. from Brown University in Ecology and Evolution. My goal is to be a life-long learner and here’s hoping this will rub off on my students.

I’ve taught science in 5th through 12th grades, specializing in the junior high school. I’ve won teaching awards but my most cherished memories come directly from my students in a classroom setting. My last eleven years have been at La Colina Junior High School in beautiful Santa Barbara.

My family and I have had the great fortune to travel extensively. In November of 2006, Steve (my husband) and I visited the last continent on our list; Antarctica. As the teacher member of an NSF scientific team, I traveled in spirit for all adventure loving students. Check my blog and the archived blog for highlights from that adventure.

The Lubchenco philosophy:
A few action words come to mind; Travel, learn, play, teach, love.
A few phrases come to mind; appreciate your family, appreciate your students,
    appreciate your colleagues, appreciate chocolate!
Keep your eyes on the prize – for me that would be a peaceful world filled with thinking
people who respect each other and their planet.
