Canasta was invented at the Jockey Club in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1939, though the craze for this fun and relaxing Rummy-based card game didn’t sweep through the US until after WWII.
One recent evening in the junkyard, we were playing a rousing round in the shade of the Cordoba with one of our many dog-themed decks, when a Chihuahua wandered in through the open chain-linked gate and started barking at us. She looked hungry and thirsty, so we gave her some food and water. After gulping down the essentials, she jumped into my lap. When I called “Canasta!” shortly thereafter, she wagged her little curly-tailed heinie and licked my nose. So we now have a junkyard Chihuahua named Canasta to relieve our junkyard cats of guard duty!
