These Golden Nature Guides predate modern versions with their vivid photos by fifty years or so. If you use one out in the field, you’ll have to go by the muted illustrations of James Gordon Irving to distinguish the
differences between say, a mountain lion and a lynx, or a black bear and a grizzly.

Each mammal has a map floating behind its head with the depressing stats of its pre-settlement and present ranges. The present range is usually about 95% less than it was in the glory days before European colonization.

Illustration has an advantage over photography in that the sketch can depict whatever the artist decides it should! So you can see the skunk doing what he does best: eating your garbage. And better than that, you can see what you’ve always wondered about: the exact location of those scent glands which regularly stink up Rover!
