The picture above is from a 60s board game called “What Shall I Be?” In those days little girls needed to start thinking about their possible careers early, because there were only six options open to them other than Housewife: Ballerina, Actress, Airline Hostess, Teacher, Model, and Nurse.

In the books below, Secretary and Fashion Designer have been added to the Womanly Careers named above. In a typical Career Girl Romance of this era, the heroine bravely goes it alone without male protection — until, of course, the super-duper alpha wolf happens along, and then her spunkiness wilts, and she decides she’ll be safer married.

RNs must have read a lot of romance novels in the past, because there’s a ton of Nurse So-n-So’s Love Life crap out there.

It’s probably harder for today’s female nurse to snare a doctor husband than it used to be, because she no longer wears one of those fetching caps, nor a girdle and tight-fitting dress.

What shall I be? Ballerina, actress, airline hostess, teacher, model, or nurse?
