in vino unitas tasting at Farallon

Great tasting
Superior wines, good friends,  and I learned some things.
In the first room, Stony Hill, Mayacamus, Diamond Creek, Blackbird, Gargiulo and Pride Mountain. It was great to see Boots pouring Diamond Creek. Volcanic Hill my favorite. the Stony Hill Chardonnay was pouring the 2004 La Toque has been pouring the 2003 in the past week The 2003 shows more sense of mineral and stone, the 2004 has more of a green note that would be more appropriate for a herb sauce. 2004 will age well, as the always do and Stony Hill had a magnum of 2001 Chardonnay on hand to make that point. , The Blackbird Merlot was tasty. I love the Gargiulo Aprile, a Sangiovese wine blended with a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon. This Oakville wine that has more earthy notes than any other California Sangiovese. I ordered a case on the spot. I tasted two unique wines at the  Mayacaymus table, a 1992 Cabernet offered at $1000. a case. A lush and complex wine, well worth the price, and a Chardonnay with brettanomyces. I am not a fan of bret, it has it’s place with some wines and some tasters, but as I walked away from the table, it occurred to me that I have never tasted a white wine that had bret, only red wines! It makes me want to learn more about bret, why does it effect almost exclusively red wines? I am reminded of how few ports are corked or how few champagnes are corked. That is something I would like to know as well.
