The Yale Alumni Chorus (“YAC”) traveled to South Africa in June/July 2007!

In the fall of 2005 YAC decided to visit South Africa - to what Bob Geldof calls the Luminous Continent. After over 20 months of planning, the tour descended on Africa in June of 2007 for a tour that lasted 18 days. We sang five concerts in five cities and experienced many wondrous sights and sounds as we toured this exciting country. In addition our outreach activities left over $200,000 in funds for South African charities that we raised from our own membership as well as South African based companies.

We retraced The Struggle in Soweto, experienced first-hand some of today’s struggles, dazzled the audiences at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival and elsewhere, and yes, spent two days with the animals (and them with us). We learned new songs and how to move while singing; we even did some drumming!

So why “Power of Song”? The history of The Struggle to overthrow the evils of apartheid is full of references to the importance of music - specifically song. Song was the unifier, the strengthener, the Power of the people. We are going to South Africa to see, and hear, and feel the Power of Song.

This site is designed to tell the story of the Power of Song Tour. It is full of links (portals to additional information on other web pages) to other sites that will give you background information and enrich your understanding of South Africa. Look for any underlined text; click on the text, and then explore the web sites you visit. You will be amazed! To start with, do you know what a vuvuzela is?
