An exerpt from the panel...Guillermo Del Toro’s views on subtitles and
dubbing
“I feel that I'll do Spanish language films again and again, and, sometimes they'll show up (audience) and sometimes they won't, and that's their responsibility. You know what I'm saying? I think the audience, our first duty is to the film, and to have the film altered in any way, I think, is a crime, in any way (applause) because that is to me the equivalent to me of saying, ... You know, the Mona Lisa is pretty fucking cool but let's make it, uh, postcard size (laughter). They can carry it in their pocket (laughter). I think sometimes we measure the success of our work because we are in an industry, we measure the success of our work in terms of admissions or money and things like that but for me its about depth of connection (applause). Its about how deep did I touch the soul (applause) of the 20 people that showed up or the 2 million people that showed up. You know, I did "Kronos" which made a million dollars in the US and I did a giant cockaroach movie for Miramax called "Mimic" which did 30 million in the US. I will tell you which one I like better (laughter) and to me the measure of success is purity of the art in that sense because as an industry it is so easy for us to get tangled in the industry side of it and I really believe if we had a fight, its a fight to make people understand subtitles not the other way around (applause)”.
