Maji Makubwa*

Water covers 71% of the earths surface.
Water is essential to all known forms of life.
We depend on oceans, rivers and lakes
for drinking water and for sources of protein.

The past decades have seen an increasing rate
of damage to all major aquatic ecosystems.
We have polluted our drinking water, overfished the oceans, and seriously damaged important habitats such as coral reefs, mangrove forests, and wetlands.

Maji Makubwa aims to contribute to the conservation of aquatic biodiversity through science, education and communication.

* Maji Makubwa is derived from the Kiswahili
words for water (maji) and big (kubwa).
