Nikoi Island Holiday

At the beginning of December, Helen suggested Nikoi Island for our family’s end of year holiday. We discovered that the 15-hectare island situated 8 km off the east coast of Bintan island in Indonesia was being developed as an eco-friendly resort, with no phones, faxes, air-conditioning, television or computers (although mobile phones do work there). Without knowing anything more about it, and what to expect when we arrived, we booked our beach house and ferry tickets and at the end of December set off with our kids to Nikoi...

It turned out to be a wonderful, unspoiled, nature sanctuary, with beautiful white sandy beaches, a pristine rain forest and magnificent white granite boulders. The kids enjoyed swimming, kayaking, climbing, and fishing. Walking along the beach on the island, we picked beautiful shells and corals of incredible shapes and colours. The food was excellent and the staff at the resort were very friendly and made us feel at home.

The main social meeting point was the open-air bar next to the main dining room area, where, to quench our thirst, we indulged in delicious fresh apple, pineapple, watermelon and orange juices.

The kids were entertained by “Yogi”, our friendly bar attendant, who became a hero to my children, particularly Gabriel, who he made shell necklaces, bamboo bow and arrows, pea shooters and wood carvings for. He also started the nightly beach bonfire, which the kids roasted marshmallows on the first night we were there.

The sea was clear and warm, and we enjoyed swimming every day. The pure, salty sea water was invigorating and the children didn’t want to stop swimming as they enjoyed the waves so much.

We came back to Singapore feeling we had a great holiday and we are already looking forward to visiting the island again in the near future. Maybe next time you can join us there...
