Burns and Fireworks
Saturday, February 17, 2007

Not *that* kind of “burns”: our friends the Burns arrived for a one-week visit on New Year’s eve, and were treated to an amazing fireworks extravaganza, seemingly on every street corner as far as we could see, and lasting well into the night. Following the instructions of the cab driver who brought us home from the airport, we “guarded the night” -- like everyone else in China that night -- by staying up past midnight, partying and watching bad television, and throwing open our doors and windows just before midnight. The fireworks and firecrackers went on into the wee hours of the morning, though we all got some sleep eventually. (UPDATE: Fireworks continue every evening for the next two weeks -- not quite as dramatically, but still frequent enough -- until March 4th, the Lantern Festival.)
