Kona Village 13 Years Later

The highlight of Debbie and my honeymoon was our stay at Kona Village, a gorgeous resort on the west coast of the Big Island. Couples or families stay in individual “hale,” all meals are fantastic (and included), and there are endless things to do on the property, including a Luau with appropriate entertainment.

This being an Angle Thanksgiving, we added a touch football game and the annual Angle Cup to the roster. This year, the Angle Cup was contested via a storytelling contest. Debbie’s tale of Sadie Finkelstein’s life-long dream of doing the hula in Hawaii was runner-up, and Samantha won with the dramatic narrative of a young boy courageously (and cleverly) saving Kona Village from a dastardly Giant who could turn people to stone. Rachel came up with a darkly comic story in which a visit to a bread factory goes horribly wrong, and Steve told of the Enlightenment of Wang Yangming. Other memorable stories included a morality tale of hippies in Hawaii, a biting satire of the Angle Cup itself, a paean to the wisdom of turtles, and an incoherent but oddly compelling saga of pirates, frogs, and malicious goddesses.

Much fun was had snorkeling, outrigger-canoeing, sailing, kayaking, and just plain swimming. Rachel discovered the difference between mussels and oysters, we had some vicious games of shuffleboard, and several of the group enjoyed professional massages overlooking the ocean. Not bad at all.
