official unofficial goodwill residency program

The Official Unofficial Goodwill Residency Program

CALL FOR STAGE HANDS, EXTRAS, GRIPS AND FOLEY ASSISTANTS: This is an open call for volunteer assistance in the making of a stop motion animation movie at 1943 SE Sixth Avenue on Friday September 12th from 10am to 8pm. (Shooting will take place in and around the Goodwill Super Store). Assistants will be assigned work on a first come basis and tasks will range from creating Foley and speaking dialogue to moving characters in the set and assisting in set/character creation. (Some assistants may be asked to get us coffee or lunch). This project is part of the TBA festival and will have a screening and reception the following evening, Saturday September 13th at 9pm, on the street at 1943 SE Sixth Avenue (next to the Goodwill). All participants will be acknowledged by name and neighborhood in the movie credits. WATCH FILM HERE!

Expanding on a past project where she unofficially designated herself as Artist in Residence at the Goodwill Super Store in SE Portland, Laurel Kurtz is coordinating a project administered by the Office of Inclusion and Parallel University for PICA’s Time Based Art Festival’s Neighborhood Projects where she has unofficially officially appointed Vicki Lynn Wilson and John larsen as Artists in Residence in the same locale.

Project by John Larsen and Vicki Wilson

Using only a laptop, camera, and materials and sounds that can be found at the Goodwill Super Store on 1943 SE Sixth Avenue, Vicki Lynn Wilson and John Larsen will create a stop motion animation of approximately 4 minutes. The following evening they will have a reception and screening of the animation projected on a wall near the Goodwill site.

On Friday, September 12, they will arrive at the Goodwill Super Store with a camera and laptop and a canopied pick-up truck (please see below). They intend to shoot the stop motion frames on sets constructed inside the Goodwill. If they are unable to complete their project inside of the Goodwill, for any reason, they will purchase their materials (a maximum of $50) and continue shooting the frames in the canopied pick-up truck in the parking lot of the Goodwill. All items purchased will be returned to the donation center of the store once they have finished shooting the frames for the animation.

They will collect Foley sounds and dialogue from the Goodwill materials as well as from participating store patrons. An advertisement will be circulated encouraging people who may be stopping by the Goodwill that day to engage in their production as a grip, best boy, Foley or assistant to the creative directors. All participants will be acknowledged with their name and neighborhood in the credits of the movie.

On Saturday they will continue editing the movie off-site.

On Saturday evening, they will set up a projector inside of the canopied truck and park it on the street next to the Goodwill Super Store. The projection will be shown on a wall in the vicinity of the Goodwill Super Store. A reception will take place around the truck at that time.

About the canopied truck: This truck is a traveling gallery called the Bernadette Gallery, owned and operated by Vicki Wilson. This project will be the first official show at the Bernadette Gallery, which will then be renovated and curated as an art space that can be viewed wherever the truck is, through the canopy windows.

Friday, September 12 10am-8pm Artists in Residence working at the Goodwill Super Store.

Saturday, September 13, 9pm Video screening and reception at 1943 SE Sixth Avenue.
