Did you know that yoga improves flexibility, strength, muscle tone, prevents pain, helps breathing, and reduces stress? Join me as we learn and practice yoga poses for overall health improvement. Students will need to bring towels and wear comfortable loose clothing to exercise in.
#1: Even though there were only four of us, we had a great time. The students practiced specific yoga poses such as the “tree pose” and “downward facing dog”. They also combined a few yoga poses with a few dance moves. Throughout the class, we will work on identifying and perfecting each pose.
#2: I was absent (due to illness) and the students joined another extra-curricular activity.
#3: We practiced different yoga positions using Kinda Yoga videos. Each video told a story and the students remembered it from last year. We also practiced seated poses such as: bound angle, easy, hero, lotus, staff, and fire log. In the weeks ahead, we will review these poses and hopefully remember all their names!
#4: This week, the students followed my direction for all of the yoga poses. We practiced seated, standing, and floor poses. Each student is doing very well and putting forth excellent effort!
#5: Our students practiced being yoga leaders this week. Each student tried to remember a pose and the rest of the class had to follow. The students loved being the teacher!
#6: The class began with yoga videos (approx. 20 min.) and ended w/the students being the yoga teacher (10 min.). In between, I guided them. I would say this was the best class by far. The students are gaining flexibility and strength. They also remembered to practice breathing techniques which is essential for any exercise and helps to relax the body.
No class this week-Veteran’s Day
#7: Our class borrowed a yoga video from the PE teachers this week. The video, “Yoga for Kids” provided excellent instruction and new poses. The student agreed they enjoyed this video!
#8: The focus of this week’s class was seated poses and floor poses. We practiced multiple poses while sitting on the floor and multiple poses while laying on the ground. Many of the poses require much strength and stomach muscles! Try doing them with your child at home.
#9: We explored Kinda Yoga this week. This video was used last year and is a great video for kids. Each yoga pose is based around an Australian animal. The students were excited to practice yoga and learn about animals!
#10: The second Kinda Yoga video (25 min.) was completed successfully by our students. Yoga has become quite easy for them and I will find extra challenging poses and more difficult videos to increase their strength and flexibility. We have one more class before the Winter Break. Happy Holidays in advance!
#11: Our last class before the break was mainly led by the students. They decided what they wanted to do and helped each other. The class is really, really small so pretty much everyone gets a lot of time to be the “yoga leader”.
#12: The students voted on doing the Kinda Yoga video. Specifically, they learned about animals that live in Australia’s oceans and did yoga poses modeled after them. We only have 3 classes left. I am currently looking for a video that incorporates dance in yoga. Hopefully, we can do it tomorrow!
#13: The video was checked out (see comment above). But, I led the class yesterday and the students did pretty well. They are flexible and trying to build abdominal strength to help them do some of the more challenging poses. While yoga is a calming exercise, it also can be physically demanding. I will post pictures soon of some poses. Practice them w/your children!
No class this week- Staff Development
#14: Today was our last yoga class. We practiced all of the poses we have been doing this past semester. I hope the students will continue using yoga to bring health and calm to their lives.
