Which Protein is Best?
Which Protein is Best?
I'm trying to add more protein to my diet, but when I visited the nutrition store, I was overwhelmed. Which products are best? Can't I get enough protein by eating whole foods?" —Todd, Los Angeles
You're right. No supplement can take the place of healthy, clean eating. My friend Ben Patrick Johnson puts it best: "Don't let the supplement hawkers fool ya—pick up that knife and fork and eat lots of good clean food. Most of the protein bars and meal replacements are candy bars and milkshakes. And our bodies don't absorb them well. Eat yams, berries, flax seeds, chicken breasts, broccoli, tuna, egg whites and raw nuts and you'll be way ahead of the game."
But sometimes it's difficult to eat enough whole food to get the amount of protein required for your goals. That's when it makes sense to supplement.
There are a couple products I like. One is 100% Whey which comes in a big black tub for about $30 I also like IsoPure because of how smooth it mixes. IsoPure also make several "juice type" protein drinks which look and taste similar to Gatorade. If you can't handle whey protein, you can try Jay Robb's Egg White Protein, which is a little more expensive but an excellent alternative.
