While most ISU students were taking finals, I decided to sand and refinish our wooden floors on the first floor of our house. My friend Joe Van Riper, who had helped me rip out the carpet back in January, was my “contractor”. Joe recruited his friend Tricia to help us. We began bright and early Monday morning by renting the floor sander and started sanding the floors to remove the coat of dark stain. We then sanded down the floors using finer sand paper each pass over the floor. We then had to remove ALL the dust. Finally we got one coat of polyurethane on by Monday night around 11:00 or so.
Tuesday morning we got up early again, and using hand sanders we sanded the floor and applied another coat of polyurethane by noon. We let it dry for 5 hours or so and repeated the sanding and applied another coat and let it sit over night. We got up early again Wednesday and sanded one more time and applied the final coat. We then let it sit until Wednesday night - after my church choir rehearsal - and with Joe’s help, put all of the furniture back in place.
I am VERY thankful for Joe and Tricia’s help. You two are SOOOO wonderful. I know you both kept telling me that you enjoyed doing this but I am not sure I believe you. This was A LOT of work.
