BOOK EXCERPT:

Introduction

There are many books on how to make money, and lots of it. There are just as many, if not many more written on the grand topic of spirituality. Yet as thoroughly as I searched, I found only limited options for people like me, a spiritual teacher looking for creative and inexpensive ways to get my name out there, attract students, and thrive in my field.

I wanted most of all to gain freedom: to be able to support myself and my family through my beloved teachings. My goal was to get paid, and paid well, for sharing the talents I have, and still maintain the spirit of balance and integrity I strive for in my own practice as a yogi and a Buddhist.

I needed ideas, fast. At the time I began this journey towards financial and spiritual success, I was working part time as a researcher for someone else’s business to make ends meet, and most of my days were spent using my time and energy towards someone else’s dream, one that didn’t remotely relate to mine. Now, that’s fine for sometimes, but eventually as teachers of a spiritual discipline, it serves our hearts and souls, as well of that of our students if we can be available to do what we do best, and have the time and space to share what we’re most passionate about.

I knew I could take my teachings to the next level, bringing them to a wider audience and doing more with the areas of expertise I had. I wanted to free myself from other work I’m not passionate about, without compromising the principles of inner and outer alignment I have built over a decade of spiritual study and practice.

In order to do that, I knew I’d have to deal with money, an area which had always made me uncomfortable. I grew up seeing money as a foreign concept, one that could make or break happiness and security without knowing how or why. I gave money a lot of power by deciding that I had to work at a steady job, go for a rational career path, and certainly couldn’t self-generate money without someone else putting me on the payroll.

As I worked those 9-5s, while teaching yoga on the side, I realized something troubling. I only really lit up and felt alive during the few hours a week I was in the yoga studio, experiencing the community and conversation I loved. When I was at work, I was just trying to just grit my teeth, do my work and make it through to the times when I could be in class, teach others, see my friends, and be creative, before the morning came all too quickly and I was dressing for the office again.

My lifestyle was no longer nourishing me. The steady paycheck wasn’t enough to tip the balance towards real abundance, and I knew I would have to at least try and figure out how to make more time for the true me, so I could have the chance to be truly happy in this lifetime.

One night I taught class on the importance of our “stories”, the tales we tell ourselves about who we are and how we must live. The Story consists of all our deepest beliefs—certainties about our personal traits and the ways of the world. It’s a necessary part of the ego’s way of orienting you to your surroundings and discerning your individuality.

The problem arises when we think our Story is set, all there is—to us and to the world. If parts of our stories become limiting, disempowering or block us from seeing other possibilities, then they are no longer serving us in a positive way. If we see our Story as written in stone, then we will not be likely to change. However, if your higher consciousness gets involved, you’ll see that though other people and experiences contributed, you actually wrote your story yourself.

And if you wrote it, then you can edit it too.

For example, lets take two common Stories I hear from many fellow mind/body teachers: I can’t make enough to survive, much less prosper, relying only on my teaching and Even if I do make money, I don’t feel like it’s spiritual to want and make a lot of money by teaching these disciplines.

Let me edit those stories, which also used to be mine, in the way that worked for me.

First, yes, you can.

And second, whoever propagated the myth that it’s not OK to accept monetary exchange for a spiritual teaching didn’t have to pay rent. Monks often lived in temples, begged for alms, were fed and clothed and looked after. Many of our current ideas around finances and spirituality come from different times with different requirements. It’s time to move into the now.

These are the new spiritual rules for our new era, and with money as our primary form of barter for food, medicine, housing, clothes, and yes, fun too…we’ve got to get over our resistance to it, where we find ourselves here and now, if we are going to learn to accept true abundance in our contemporary world.

I will add that it’s certainly not the highest spiritual path to have to stay in a job you dislike, and have less time to spend doing the things you were put here to do, and waste your talents and your time, as well as not being available to inspire your students as much as you could. We as yogis work so hard each time we step on that mat to stay in alignment. What happens when you step off of it?

When we understand that money is something we must all have to some degree, in order to live when and where we do, and be able to make a difference, and realize that the more resources we each have, the more we can help the world, then we can finally move on to the next part of the conversation.

As a seeker on your own path, you need to be aware that ultimately, the process of opening to receive money and success around your own talents is one of accepting at a very deep level that you are worthy of these things, that you know enough to be valued, and that you are valuable enough.

This means we must go on the hero’s journey through self-doubts, insecurities and old stories to get to a warrior place inside that fights for our inherent value, and asks us to request, receive, and then honor the value placed on us by others.  This is extremely challenging, but awesomely rewarding at the same time.

I was able, through the study of various financial books, marketing techniques that work in other sectors, and then melding them with the enlightened values of a yoga practice, to create Conscious Commerce: an effective program and techniques to move any mind/body instructor’s time and energy more fully into their healing career.

I call it “conscious” as opposed to just plain commerce, because as people on a spiritual path, we have the tools and the strength to include everyone’s well-being and best possible outcomes into the planning and execution of our own financial best interests.  We do not act, if acting means we’re moving from fear, lack or instant gratification over the ultimate goal of getting there in ways we can be proud of right now.

This commitment to marketing oneself and one’s work with integrity, since it’s born from abundance, grows more strongly abundant with each aligned decision and courageous step in the heart’s direction. I’ve seen hundreds of clients succeed using this formula. It certainly works for me. Within one year, I was able to leave my day job completely, and replace it with what I now call my YAY job—the one where I spend my days being productive, now on my own behalf.

Using the ideas and action steps I’ll share with you in the book, I was able to go from less than 10 people per class to more than 40 50, or however many the room will allow. I have a bestselling yoga DVD, the Core Strength Vinyasa Yoga: Power Hour now on the Top 10 at Amazon.com, and another in creation. I was able to gain an online audience of over one million viewers per month. I travel around the country, teaching my Core Strength and Road Trip Guide to the Soul workshops at events like the Yoga Journal Conference in NYC [March 2008] and Omega Institute [September 2009].

With one book, the “Road Trip Guide to the Soul” and this e-book already published, and two more on the way, I count mine as a growing success story, one that stemmed out of a profession many say is overrun, and too competitive to succeed. I completely and utterly disagree.

The beautiful thing is that you are as capable as I of doing the same in your own life, creating optimal success and personal freedom by living and working from your own amazing interests and talents.  And it doesn’t take much money to begin making more money. As you’ll find in this book, there are so many resources awaiting you to put them to good use, and you will receive so much in return.

Not only is my current life so much more rewarding than my old one with its old stories, but I’m now making at least three times the income I was then. I’m happy, and so are my students. I have enough to cover my bills, save some, help some, and have fun some. And to me…that’s true balance.

As a yoga teacher and author of personal empowerment books, I want to share with you how to align your life, and amplify your happiness, by revealing the exact actions you can take to build your classrooms and consultations, and show you smart ways to make more money in less time doing what you love.

I will walk you through simple ways to increase your visibility in your field, and turn each teaching appearance into a gem that returns wealth to you again and again. Together, we’ll get you an online audience, who will add to your abundance exponentially, as you reach even more people who will appreciate and resonate with your unique perspective.

No matter where you are now, this little e-book will free you much more, and give you tools you can use and expand for years to come.
