Quick Tips
Close a Window
To close a window quickly and easily, hit ⌘W. In web browsers, this key combination closes tabs.
Minimize a Window
To minimize a window quickly and easily, double-click on its title bar.
Close an Application
To close an application quickly and easily, hit ⌘Q.
Delete Files/Folders
To send a file to the trash, instead of dragging it there, select the file/folder and hit ⌘⌫.
Open Those Spring-loaded Folders
If you don’t feel like waiting a second for the spring-loaded folder to open, hit the SPACEBAR while holding the file/folder over the folder and it will open immediately.
Answer System Prompts
When prompted with a choice, like allow or deny, the blue button will respond to the RETURN key, while the button outlined in blue will respond to the SPACEBAR.
Empty the Trash
To empty the trash, instead of right-clicking and selecting “Empty Trash”, you can just hit ⇧⌘⌫.
To empty the trash without the system warning, hit ⇧⌥⌘⌫.
Highlight/Select Text
Double-click on a word in any application to highlight it. Triple-click to highlight the entire paragraph.
Automatically Close That Printer Icon
You may have noticed that the printer does not close itself when it is done. Next time you print something, right-click the printer dock icon and select Auto Hide. It will close itself, when it is finished printing, from that point on.
Quiet That Volume Button
That volume key “blip” can be a little annoying. Press ⇧ while pressing any one of the volume keys to quiet the noise it makes. ⌥⇧ while pressing any volume key breaks each volume level into 4 sub-levels.
Invert Display Colors
Hit ⌘⌥⌃8. Cool, huh? Hit the key combo again to change it back. What’s the point? I don’t know...
