ATTENTION PARENTS/STUDENTS

The Frank M. Doyle Foundation, Inc. Scholarships

A reminder that applications are now available for The Frank M. Doyle Foundation, Inc. 2007-2008 scholarships.

Any graduating senior or alumnus of the Huntington Beach Union High School District, any graduate, student or alumnus of Huntington Beach Adult High School, any graduate, student (past or present) or alumnus of the following Southern California Community Colleges is eligible to apply for a scholarship from the Foundation.  Golden West, Orange Coast, Coastline, Fullerton, Irvine Valley, Cypress, Santa Ana, Saddleback or Santiago Canyon.

There is no income cap; the Foundation awards both need based and merit scholarships.  We require no minimum grade point average.  One may enroll in any field of study.  Our recipients attend trade schools, community colleges, state universities, the UC system, schools outside of California, public and private schools and are undergraduate and graduate students.  They are students who school to become beauticians and graphic artists as well as doctors and lawyers.  Age is not a factor.  If you meet the criteria you may apply anytime during your lifetime.  Our scholarships are for one year only and one may apply as many times as they wish.  Since 1997 the Foundation has awarded just under four million dollars in scholarships to your community.

Appropriate applications may be downloaded from our website: www.frankmdoyle.org.  Requests for an application can also be submitted to the Foundation in writing, (post, email or fax), advising the name and address to whom the application should be mailed.  If you know a deserving student who may not have the confidence to apply, we would appreciate hearing from you on their behalf.

If you have any questions, please contact the Foundation.

With best wishes for a safe and happy holiday season,

For Immediate Release

Los Angeles, CA - January 8, 2007 The Tomás Rivera Policy Institute (TRPI) proudly announces the release of an updated and expanded version of its popular scholarship directory, Latino College Dollars: Scholarships for California's Latino Students. The directory, which was originally released in early November 2006, has been viewed online more than 15,000 times and quickly sold out its initial print run.

Now in its second printing, the directory has been expanded to include more than 20 of the largest national scholarship funders, providing millions of dollars of additional scholarship opportunities for California's Latino students.

Printed copies will be distributed through The Sallie Mae Fund's national "Paying for College" Bus Tour, which launches its California tour today. Additional scholarship directories will be distributed by the Tomás Rivera Policy Institute, and by the Hispanic Scholarship Fund at their programs throughout Southern California.

Funding for the second printing was made possible with a special grant from The Walt Disney Company. Funding for the original project was made possible with funding from The Sallie Mae Fund, Southern California Edison, and The Walt Disney Company.

To download a PDF of the expanded directory, click here.

The online version of the directory, which was made possible with a grant from AT&T, may be accessed at www.latinocollegedollars.org

Don't Be Fooled!

A genuine scholarship can help to pay for college, but beware of con artists. The Federal Trade Commission says complaints about scholarship scams rose to 4486 in 2004. Up from just 670 in 2003!

A financial aid service is probably fake if:

There's any application fee for a scholarship.

There's any advance fee for an educational loan.

A scholarship is "guaranteed."

Be suspicious if you're told that:

"Billions of dollars of aid went unclaimed last year." That's simply untrue.

"We apply on your behalf." The reality: You must always submit your own application for a scholarship.

"We have a high success rate." In fact, fewer than 1% of the people who pay for scholarship services actually obtain one.

Confused about all those academic, state required, exit and college entrance exams you're required to take? Are you not even certain when you're supposed to take these important tests? Well, rest assured you're not alone. There are plenty of confused students (and parents) out there. Good thing for you there's a handy guide that clears up this most confusing matter. Your saving grace is the Planning Guide for Students and Parents which is now available on the school district's Web site. Read it, use it, love it.
