We’ve made the hoses really easy to operate.

There are two sets of hoses at the Community Garden, both sets are located along the main (center) path. One is nearer the front of the garden, the other closer to the back. These hoses will enable you to water any spot in or around the main garden area without difficulty.

Each set of hoses has a primary large blue handle that turns water on and off.
Lift the handle to a vertical
position to make water available to the hoses; lower the handle completely to shut water off to the hoses.
Each hose set also has a 75 foot hose and a 100 foot hose. The hoses are color coded to the on-off valves that control the water flow.  There are four valves controlling each set of hoses. The valve with the blue tape controls the hose with the blue tape, and the valve with the yellow tape controls the hose with the yellow tape. This makes it easy to see which hose
you are turning on or off so you don’t inadvertently turn off the hose that your neighbor is using. (Yes, it happens!)
Notice at the orange indicators (which are at the 9 o’clock position, the ‘OFF’ position) in the photo to the right. To turn the hose on, simply rotate either the yellow or blue valve orange knob to the 12 o’clock
position.

To water your garden, lift the blue handle and turn on the appropriate (yellow or blue) knob. Squeeze the nozzle and water your garden. When you’re through, turn the yellow or blue knobs to the 9 o’clock position (OFF) and put the large blue handle fully down. That’s it!

We ask that you “bleed” the hoses after they have been turned off completely, that is, squeeze the nozzle handle to relieve any remaining pressure in the hoses. During the heat of summer, the water in the hoses can become VERY hot and put a great deal of pressure on the hoses. By removing that pressure, we’ll keep the hoses in good condition for us all.

Oh yes, the green valve is for filling watering cans or for drinking. Keep a cup at the garden for yourself. The remaining valve is capped off for now and is not in use.

So, to use the hoses:

    1) lift the blue handle all the way up,

  1. 2) turn on the appropriate valve, and

  2. 3) start watering.

When you’re finished, please

  1. 1) turn off the appropriate valve (yellow or blue),

  2. 2) lower the blue handle all the way down,

  3. 3) wind the hoses up neatly, in one direction only, and

  4. 4) bleed the pressure from the hose.

We have A LOT of water pressure, so be careful, especially with the green valve.

Again, PLEASE make sure the hoses are replaced on the hose reels neatly…that is without kinks or twists. Wrap them around the reels in one direction only. Please don’t lay them across the reel back and forth. This will tangle the hoses. Following these directions makes it easier for all of us.

If you have any questions, please ask us or email us.

Thanks,

The ‘Friends’
