Call for Nominations : International Perspectives in Psychology
International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation
The Publications and Communications (P&C) Board of the American Psychological Association and Division 52 (International Psychology) of the APA have opened nominations for the editorship of International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation, for the years 2011–2016. The editor search committee is co-chaired by Lynn Collins, PhD, and Peter Ornstein, PhD.
International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation, to begin publishing in 2011, is committed to publishing conceptual models, investigative methodologies, and intervention strategies to help understand, study, and influence the world’s major mental health problems. The journal will promote psychological science and practice that is contextually informed, culturally inclusive and serves the public interest. Recognizing that mental health problems are imbedded in economic, environmental, political, and social contexts, International Perspectives in Psychology is a multidisciplinary title that will incorporate empirical findings from education, medicine, public health, applied and basic psychology, sociology and other related disciplines.
Included in the global concerns that interest the journal are inter-group conflict, societal transformations and national development, threats to the natural environment and recovery from national disasters, mental health care delivery and capacity buildings, and the struggles and physical and mental health needs of disempowered groups.
Editorial candidates should be available to start receiving manuscripts in July 2010 to prepare for issues published in 2011. Please note that the P&C Board encourages participation by members of underrepresented groups in the publication process and would particularly welcome such nominees. Self-nominations are also encouraged.
Candidates should be nominated by accessing APA’s EditorQuest site on the Web. Using your Web browser, go to http://editorquest.apa.org. On the Home menu on the left, find “Guests.” Next, click on the link “Submit a Nomination,” enter your nominee’s information, and click “Submit.”
Prepared statements of one page or less in support of a nominee can also be submitted by e-mail to Molly Douglas-Fujimoto, Managing Director, Education Publishing Foundation, at mdouglas-fujimoto@apa.org.
Deadline for accepting nominations is January 31, 2010, when reviews will begin.
ADOPT A PSYCHOLOGIST: Collaboration needed!!!
Most of you know the "Adopt a Psychologist" program. The importance and implications are staggering.
Many psychologists from abroad would like to have a direct relationship with psychologists from the USA and participate in the APA activities including acting as Liaison for their country.
Some of the obstacles we encountered are:
Some do not have an active credit card. For others sending money abroad is difficult or the rate of $30 dollars is too much for their exchange. In a few cases where couples are both psychologists, to pay for two is difficult.
I would like to please ask you to consider Adopting a Psychologist or a Student from abroad or the USA to become an affiliate member of Division 52. I will very much appreciate your collaboration.
You could consider Adopting a Psychologist from Abroad in honor of someone you care...
Please let me know if you are ready and you can also choose the country and city you would prefer. Thank you very much.
With much appreciation,
Rivka Bertisch Meir, Ph.D., MPH, LMHC

Division 52’s 2008 Ursula Gielen Global Psychology Book Award Goes to
“Culture and Leadership Across the World”
by
Renée Goodstein (Chair) and Uwe Gielen (ex-officio member), and
The Ursula Gielen Global Psychology Book Award Committee
Every year, Division 52’s ‘Ursula Gielen Global Psychology Book Award’ is given to the authors or editors of a recent book that is judged to make the most significant contribution to psychology as an international discipline and profession. The winners of the 2008 Award are Jagdeep S. Chhokar, Felix C. Brodbeck, and Robert J. House for their book Culture and Leadership Across the World: The GLOBE Book of In-Depth Studies of 25 Societies. Honorable Mention is given to Shane R. Jimerson, Thomas D. Oakland, and Peter T. Farrell, who served as editors for The Handbook of International School Psychology.
The purpose of ‘The Ursula Gielen Global Psychology Book Award’ is to support the growing recognition in psychology that our profession is and must be global in nature. In line with this goal, submissions for the 2008 Award included authors, co-authors, and editors from many countries around the globe. Expert referees were asked to evaluate each submission based on criteria such as how large and significant a contribution the book makes to psychology as a global discipline and profession, and the international or global nature of the book’s contents.
Based on feedback from the reviewers, the committee selected Jagdeep S. Chhokar et al.’s work because their book adds important information to our understanding of the interconnection between societal culture, organizational culture, and leadership around the globe. The book is based on the mammoth GLOBE project, which involved 170 co-investigators from 62 participating countries. The project asked whether there are leader behaviors, attributes, and organizational practices that are universally accepted and effective across cultures. In addition, the project sought to identify behaviors, attributes and practices that are prevalent only in certain cultures. At the same time, the book examines how societal values may impact organizational practices and leader behaviors, and how these in turn, might impact the welfare of members of the societies under investigation.
For those interested in hearing a summary of the findings in Culture and Leadership Across the World, Jagdeep S. Chhokar, the lead editor, has accepted an invitation to give a presentation at the August APA 2009 Convention in Toronto, Canada as part of Division 52’s Hospitality Suite Program. For more information about this important event, see the Division 52 schedule of events for APA, which will be published in a forthcoming issue of the Division’s Newsletter, International Psychology Bulletin (http://www.internationalpsychology.net/newsletter/).

DIVISION 52 Fundraising Task Force
Division 52 has formed a Fundraising Task Force, charged with finding ways to increase revenue from sources other than dues. This money will be used to support current and future projects that at present the Division is unable to support financially. The Task Force is chaired by Michael Stevens and includes Harold Takooshian and Florence Denmark. Thus far, the Task Force has identified advertising, bequests and estate planning, book royalties, and organizational support from the APA as potential sources of non-dues-related revenue. The Task Force welcomes other ideas for raising funds and invites you to submit them for consideration to Michael Stevens at mjsteven@ilstu.edu.
