Activities
in Greater New York
The APA Division of International Psychology, formed in 1997, has grown to over 1,000 members world-wide, as described at www.internationalpsychology.net. With this growth, Division 52 encourages international activities at the regional and local level. The first two of these are the “international committee” of the Eastern Psychological Association, and the NYC regional group.
Origin. “NY52” was launched in NYC on 18 March 2002, when 55 people visited a forum on “Psychologists at the United Nations” at Fordham University. Since 30 percent of all 1,000 D52 members are now concentrated in the one city of greater New York, NY52 arranges a dozen gatherings of all sorts each year—mostly free symposia, exhibits, workshops, or conferences kindly hosted by local campuses (CUNY, Fordham, Pace, St. Francis). Some of these are in concert with other groups, like SPSSI or the APA team at the United Nations. An article in the International Psychology Bulletin describes how members in other regions can follow the “NY52 formula” to start a local group in their area. [Citation: H. Takooshian & R.S. Velayo (2006, Dec.). Forming a local group of international psychologists: Why and how? Psychology International, 17 (6), 21-23. ]
