Youth Exchange - Outbound
The Rotary International District 6060 Youth Exchange Outbound Short Term Program sends high school students abroad for a summer stay in a foreign country; the Long Term Program sends them for an eleven-month stay, including a full year in a foreign high school. Most long term program students return having experienced the best year of their lives. Here's how the youth exchange outbound program works:
1. In October, students interested in participating in the exchange program complete and mail a written application. In November and December, the District Youth Exchange Committee interviews the applicants. For more about applications and interviews, click here.
2. After the Committee has interviewed all applicants, it selects students to participate in the program as "outbound" exchange students. The District, as the outbounds' "sponsor", then contacts foreign country districts to "place" the outbounds in a "host" country and district. We try to place each outbound in a country and district that will provide a great experience for the outbound and Rotarians in both countries and districts.
3. In February or March, the outbounds have their first of several "orientations", which help outbounds learn the rules and skills that will serve them well as exchange students and youth ambassadors for their District 6060 sponsor and for Rotary International. For more about orientations, click here.
4. In June, the short term outbounds leave for a four-to-six week foreign country cultural experience. In July, they return. Then their family "hosts" a student "inbound" from that country, reciprocating the experience and completing the "exchange".
5. In August, the long term outbounds leave for a ten-to-eleven month foreign country cultural immersion. Typically, they stay with three host families for three-and-a-half months each. Just like their host country's other teenagers, the outbounds go to high school. They often get involved in sports, school clubs, and community events. At special Rotary orientations, they meet outbounds from other countries. Many travel extensively.
Timelines for these events can vary quite a bit, and the length of short term and long term stays can vary some as well. Despite any variances, most outbounds return, as I did from a long term youth exchange in Belgium years ago, with the experience of a lifetime. In the good spirit of Rotary, we really do make the world a better place, one young person at a time.
