Città di Castello is at the northern end of Umbria. During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, it was one of the most important cultural and artistic places.
Gubbio was originally an Etruscan settlement well before the Roman era. It is considered one of the best preserved medieval towns. It is well worth a visit.
Assisi is, of course, famous for Saint Francis. It was the first place we visited outside of the area around our friend’s home.
We knew Orvieto for its wine, but we really didn’t  know much else about this gem. The cathedral is considered one of the finest in Italy.
Perugia was in our minds the place where chocolate came from. Now it is a city that we enjoyed. Deutra, which is a little south of there, is a wonderful little town worth a visit both for the pottery and the town.
Lake Trasimeno is the largest lake on the Italian Peninsula. It is the site of a bloody defeat of  Rome by Hannibal in 217 BC. It was a resort for the Romans and continues to be a one. It is a beautiful lake worthy of a visit.
Umbria
Our friends have a place in Northern Umbria near Città di Castello, which we visited often.  On the weekend, we stayed with our friends and saw the local sights. During the week, we traveled in Umbria and Tuscany. We enjoyed Umbria immensely.
