Course Objectives:

This course will cover the art and theatre of India, Bali, Java, China, and Japan. For each of the three sections of the course, each student will be expected to classify 36 works according to relevant information regarding the artist, date, country of origin, culture, religion, genre, style, medium, and historic period. Also, students will be expected to identify aesthetic ideas and cultural values in the readings and lectures and relate them accurately to the works presented in class. This course is writing intensive.

This class has two textbooks, Eastern Standard Time (EST) and the World Cultures Resource Series (WCRS). Other reading assignments are posted online at the course web page under the day the readings are due in the course schedule listed below.


Short Comparative Writing Assignments

(3 x 30 points.) Choose  any two of the folders available in that section and write a comparison about the similarities and differences you have found in the two pictures. The essay must be between 400 to 600 words. Essays will be graded according to the accuracy of the content, the quality of the writing, and the relevance of the comparison. Each essay will be due the Sunday before the fourth week of each section.


EWP Rewrite Assignment

(30 points + the old grade is changed to the new grade.) Choose one of the already written short comparative essays and expand the essay so that it includes at least one bibliographic reference from a book or journal article and is at least 800 words. Information about submitting the essay to will be included in the grade email. The EWP rewrite assignment is due Wednesday, December 3rd, Midnight

Exams

(3 x 40 points.) Everyone will be tested on ten images taken from the 35 folders available that section. Exams are open notes. Each exam will take place on the Wednesday of the last week of each section.


Research Project

(40 points.) Instead of the final exam students may opt to undertake a research project. Take at least 30 of the folder images and choose a visual way to display and organize the information about the images so that it elucidates some area or aspect of the data. This could be some kind of timeline, flow chart or graph that describes the changes in the style and content of the images. Projects will be graded on accuracy, complexity, and clarity of the information presented.


Final Exam

(40 points.) The final exam will be broadly comparative across all three sections of the class. Twelve  images will be posted online the week before finals and students will be expected to write two different comparison essays drawn from the twelve images. Essays must be submitted to turnitin.com by Wednesday of exam week, midnight.


Class Rules:

The folders and their contents may only be seen during class time and may not for any reason leave the class.

Photographing the images in the folders is not allowed.

Sign your name and date on each folder you use for each class period you use it.

Work in groups of 3 to 6. Students are not allowed to work alone.

Each group may have no more that 5 folders at any given time.

Do not mark on or leave any notes in the folders.

Any damaged or lost folders will be replaced with new and different content.
