The tree was a Western Red Cedar and it had been struggling with disease and insect attack. The thing to remember is that rarely do trees just all of a sudden die. First, they are negatively impacted in some way. In the urban environment it is usually the sudden change in their immediate surroundings. This is why it is important to consider consulting our Certified Arborists prior to remodeling or constructing near trees. We can easily help you work your trees into a Tree Presevation Plan. (Did you know that trees may be worth as much as 7000 of your home value?)
Pacific Tree Works Incorporated, Tree Care in Portland, Beaverton, Vancouver, Manzanita.

In the last few decades tree care has come a long way. New information backed by research has changed the way tree care is handled. There are standards that have been established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI- A300) in collaboration with the International Society of Arboriculture. The standards address proper tree pruning and tree removal procedures. They also discuss when and how to fertilize your trees and how to install cabling a bracing systems for tree preservation and tree safety.
With this in mind there really isn’t any trade secrets. Information is available on the ISA’s website at www.treesaregood.com as well as various universities, the US Forest Service, and the TCIA. If you have specific questions or concerns please give us a call at 503 473 6067. We offer free consultations and just simply want to help you.
Your property and trees are valuable. Take the time to protect your investment.

The old maple tree is in Lake Oswego. Unfortunately, it had seen its share of poor pruning in the modern age. With the amount of decay it was considered for removal but we chose to reduce the canopy height and weight to prolong its existence a bit longer. Trees don’t have to be removed as often as we think.
That’s me in the trunk.

We were invited to visit Mr and Mrs Becker’s property in Sherwood. A spectacular three acres that they have enjoyed for 20 plus years. In that time though their trees grew. Our project was to increase the availability of sunlight through the trees. The home had little sunlight in the winter and was intermittent in the Spring and Summer. As most of us would agree, by the time April rolls around we could all use a ray of sunshine.
The trees in the project were Oregon Big Leaf Maple, Western Red Cedar and Doug Fir. Our objective was to Crown Raise the Cedars to a new canopy level of about 35 feet. The idea was to allow the Southerly Winter light to be let through just under the new canopy level and into the back of the home.
Before pruning:

Before pruning to raise
the crown.

After After

Sunshine is good. A view to the South with Sean and a rake. And a photo from the back yard looking SE toward the shed-note its the same angle as the heading photo. The shed and more light.
Thanks to the Becker family for their confidence in our work!
