The Artist ‘Statement’.
I was again recently asked by a curator for my ‘artist statement’ . My response to her was along these lines.
I’m going to leave statements for defense lawyers and politicians…. … you either get it or you don’t.
In this age of sounds bites and “microwavable” solutions, to described an expanse of artist’s work in three sentences in order to fit a press release… to “package”, is to lose reflection and self discovery. There is another option, however, you could perhaps look at the work for yourself and distill your own conclusions.
To problem solve is a creative process…. And that by very nature eliminates the limitation of specializing, and allows you to paint everythingand anything. Sculptural, film, paint, written word, painted word, on varied surfaces, from Detroit sheet metal to fine Belgian linen, digital formats and wearable silk, To travel through varied mediums and have command of images, this is to manifest your thinking into a creation.
The joy of exploration warrants the question, not why limit yourself, but rather why notunlimited yourself.
