NEW BOOK! NEW BOOK! NEW BOOK!
TV 4 & 9 WILL BE USING AND REFERENCING FOR ALL TESTS, THE NEW ZETTL VIDEO BASICS TEXTBOOK 6TH EDITION. Do NOT buy the 5th edition! All the Hi-Definition material in the 6th edition will be on the tests.
The New 6th Edition of our Zettl Textbook (bundled with the Zettl VideoLab 3.0) is in the LACC Bookstore.
For those of you on a budget, the ONLINE published version of your Zettl Video Basics 6th Ed. is also available ONLINE at the Publisher’s web address below. For those on an even MORE restricted budget, the individual Chapters may be ordered individually from the same web address.
Unfortunately, the VideoLab 3.0 (which you need) is not offered as a bundle with the ONLINE Edition. If you already have VideoLab 3.0, this would be a cheap alternative to purchasing the new 6th Edition.
Follow these simple steps:
Go to the following web address:
In the Title, author, or keyword search window enter:
“Video Basics”
Remember that we are using the 6th Edition (don’t click on the 5th edition which is still listed). Notice that you have 3 choices for ordering online.

Hi, Students! This Spring Semester, 2010, TV 4 will be taught by Prof. David Jones. Do NOT use my Syllabus for HIS class. Please contact Prof. Jones for ALL course material.
TV 4 is a basic course that teaches you all about the individual pieces of equipment used in the Studio and on location. We don’t do any productions in TV 4, we just play with the equipment. The first production oriented class is TV 9 and just about all the TV 9 students also take TV 4. Why? Since almost half the semester in TV 9 will be devoted to doing productions, it leaves less time to actually learn the TV equipment well thus, TV 4. You’ll be learning how to operate Hi-Def. cameras, an audio board (and microphones, etc), and our new Hi-Def. For.A video switcher. Of course, you’ll also learn a lot about lighting a set; 3 weeks worth, in fact. Lighting on location and lighting from the floor (cinema style lighting) will also be covered. If you have a tough time visually figuring out how to do something and would rather just get your hands on the equipment, this is the class for you. Yes, we have tests and a final but there’s also 5 great exercises designed for different pieces of equipment and if you’re also taking TV 9 this semester, the excercise sheets can also be credited in TV 9. (Hint: sign up for TV 9 also). Think of all the extra time you’d gain experience on all the equipment if you took both classes. Besides, in the next class up the ladder, TV 46, you’ll be expected to know how to use all the equipment without any more training. The students that produce the best projects in TV 46 took TV 4 when they took TV 9 so... sIgn up for TV 9! Either enroll in TV 9 now or ask me for an ADD card the first day of class in TV 9 (provided it hasn’t closed). This semester, TV 9 is offered Thursday evenings (section 3620). Click on the direct link to TV 9 at the top of the page for more details on my TV 9 class.
Due to recently enacted state educational guidelines, all Exercise Sheets used and submitted to me from all my classes must be kept for future, random evaluation of the course (not the students - student’s names will be blacked out for evaluation purposes). If you preferred writing your notes on these Exercise Sheets in the past, you can see me to “borrow” your already submitted Exercise Sheets to have it photocopied, and then return it to me. Otherwise, in the future, maybe make two copies of each Exercise; One to turn in to me, and one for you to keep (and makes notes on) or write your notes in a notebook.
There are also tons of neat stuff that have been added to the RESOURCES page including lots of video shorts dealing with topics taught in TV 4 & 9. Check out the Hot Key Pointers to Great Video Shorts on that page for a wealth of entertaining videos dealing with topics you must learn in TV 4 & 9. Who says learning has to be boring? The Resources page can also be accessed from the top of any of my webpages.
