In the last few years I made the very serious commitment to put together a world-class collection of high-end show guitars that I could be really proud of. I’m not screwing around here or trying to be cool. These are serious tools. Although I do love the bombast and excess. I’ve always been a relatively modestly financed musician with two or three good electrics, a vintage nylon and a working man’s steel string. All heavily customized. And one high-end steel that I commissioned a few years back that I have the real privilege of composing my serious work on that is a
true work of art: My Breedlove C2.
Like all of my guitars, they found me and there was
a spiritual connection. Please let me be clear.
I am truly blessed to be in possession of these
extraordinary instruments. And yes, I play five or six
a day in rotation. Each one has a different feel and
sonic personality. It takes an enormous amount of
work and effort to audition and familiarize myself
with each one.
Serious acoustic players know that each instrument
responds optimally in certain tunings and string
tensions to really make them speak. And to run
the electrics through the seemingly endless effects,
pickups and amp combinations to correctly integrate
them into my gig and stage rigs.
For so many years I worked with only three
or four total and it was never an issue. Just
restringing and keeping these bad boys
tuned and humidified is a daunting yet
really pleasurable process.
Each new session brings new awareness
and I’m living a long-held dream that I
turned into a goal that is now a reality.
Below you will find the guitar gallery and
slideshow. I knew it would be a task to
get them all photographed correctly
without professional lighting.
It was a lot of fun rigging up the mic and
speaker stands with the shop lights and
just getting it done was a satisfying
learning process.
These are some of the finest tone woods and most
spectacular wood grains and finishes anywhere. It
doesn’t get any better.
I did my
best to get the
exposures as close
to the actual
intensity and
temperature of the
colors and finishes
as possible.
Seeing them in
person and playing
them is really the only way to do them justice. I hope you enjoy these amazing sound sculptures
as much as I do.
