Thanks everyone for getting Rock’n’RollSoul’s latest residency at the PHOENIX, Cavendish Square, W1.off to a rioutous start.

Only one person turned-tail at the door on hearing that Lack Of Afro had cancelled at the last minute. For the rest of the packed house, six hours of soul, funk, psych and garage from GARY BARRELL, THE HORSE, EMMA SUNLEYnd the FUNK PURSUIVANT was more than enough, especially when augmented by a guest turn by Weller bass man and all-round good egg ANDY LEWIS (who met his fiancee at our Night Of 1,000 Dances back in 2004 - aww!).

What was especially great was seeing so many of you wearing our FREE BADGES from previous parties. And we’re expecting more old faces out in force for our next night on FRIDAY OCT 30, when RNRS is proud to bring together for
one night only Messrs
EDDIE PILLER and STUART KIRKHAM.  These two powerhouses of partying used to work together at ACID JAZZ, the agenda-setting record label of which Eddie is still at the helm, 21 years on.

Eddie’s roots go back to Countdown records and the mod revival; he released the seminal compilation 5-4-3-2-1 - GO! As well as giving ace bands like Making Time, The Prisoners and JTQ their first exposure, Eddie appeared in a Style Council vid around this time, cementing his position as King Of The Mods. He also had a massive hand in the regeneration of Shoreditch by opening the fondly remembered Blue Note. He plays records all round Europe, has recently been heard DJing on QRadio, BBC 6Music and DIESEL:U:MUSIC RADIO, and his latest venture is Tri Sound, a label with the legendary Marshall Chess (you may have heard their first release played loud at RNRS, the mysterious Third Degree’s version of Duffy’s MERCY.

A word from our sponsors…

Soho’s finest dealers of soul, funk, reggae and dance vinyl and CDs Sounds Of The Universe are very kindly giving out our flyers with all purchases. Please support them by buying all your records at 7 Broadwick St or at their site.
…among the many labels stocked at Sounds Of The Universe are the excellent Jazzman and Funk 45, who are also doing us a favour with the flyers. See their latest releases, listen to sound samples then buy them direct from here.

Stuart, meanwhile, has DJed at Rock’n’RollSoul many times, as well as at the likes of Soul Cure and Rated-X. Check your record collection and you’re sure to see some of his handiwork. He put together the excellent RIGHT ON! series of Warner and Atlantic funk nuggets, the funk-rock fusion mix of SCORCHED EARTH, and the recent FANIA DJ SERIES full of Latin and boogaloo goodness. He also recently hung out in the Isle Of Wight with Ralph Hutter, which is not something most people can boast of.
