Narrative Biography
Twenty nine years of ordained ministry has taken me on an incredible journey and God has blessed me. I have served five parishes: St. Michael’s in Bristol (RI), Church of the Holy Comforter in Vienna (VA), Church of St. Andrew the Apostle (CT), St. Peter’s (CT), and St. Christopher’s (IN).
St. Christopher’s is a congregation of 950 members and growing fast. We embarked on a $7,000,000 building program to accommodate the growth. The project is two thirds finished. The new education/administration building was completed in 2004. The fellowship hall opened in 2006. The parish will break ground for the new sanctuary and nave in 2008, a building that will seat 500. All of this will be accomplished without debt. St. Christopher’s has become an “externally focused congregation. We have assembled an Angel Army of 130 individuals. The congregation identifies outreach opportunities in our community and we send SWAT teams (Strategic Willing and Temporary) into God’s vineyard every month.
During my eight year ministry as Vicar of St. Andrew’s, the congregation entered into a “Descending Grant Covenant” with the diocese. We eliminated all aid in four years, burned the original mortgage on the church building, and became a growing, self-sustaining parish in a town whose population was not growing.
My twelve years as Rector of St. Peter’s the influx of young families necessitated the expansion of the facilities. A successful Capital Campaign led to the construction of an expanded parish hall and new classroom space. The congregation started a ministry at the state correctional center in Cheshire in 1991. Within three years we had over 20 members visiting the prison weekly as tutors and Threshold mentors.
It has been a privilege to serve on several community boards and diocesan committees. Presently I am on the Executive Council of the Diocese of Indianapolis, the Task Force for Structure, and the Endowment and Finance Committee. My three year term on the Standing Committee just ended. I was President of that body from 2005 to 2007. In Connecticut I was a member of the Clergy/Family Wellness Committee for twelve years and the President of the Church Scholarship Society. In Rhode Island, I volunteered to sit on the College Commission and the Hunger Task Force. I also served as Treasurer on Connecticut’s search team for a bishop in 1995. “Hands on” outreach is a passion. I have led teams to Illinois (1993 flood clean up) and to Mississippi (Katrina 2005).
In the community I have been a member of several boards: Bristol County YMCA (RI), Blue Ribbon Panel for Education in Rocky Hill, Cheshire Human Services Commission, Advisory Committee for the Visiting Nurses of greater Waterbury (CT), and Family Services of Greater Waterbury (CT). I was especially blessed through my work at Family Services. The agency was able to secure a $500,000 grant from the state of Connecticut and we built a safe home for children. This facility provided temporary lodging for children who were the victims of violence and neglect.
I have served as a college chaplain (Roger Williams University) and as the Episcopal chaplain to the Veteran’s Home (RI).
