World War 1 changed the lives of British People and their villages forever. Many of the young men joined the army together and later died together in the bloody battles that followed.
There were over 20 million civilian and military deaths recorded during World War I. The thousands of bodies that were found are buried in Commonwealth War Grave Cemeteries across the region.
The bodies of many soldiers killed in World War I were never found. These people have been commemorated on a number of large memorials, The Menin Gate in the town of Ypres, Tyne Cot Memorial near the village of Passchendaele and Thiepval on The Somme are the largest.
