I stole this from someone, and as I am determined to hang onto this blog, I shall post it. It also forces my musical tastes down your throats, in the hopes of promoting lesser-known bands :D (Even though a lot of the bands listed are or have been super=famous at one point . . .)
List your top 10 most played bands on iTunes (or whatever):
1. My Chemical Romance
2. toad the wet sprocket
3. Butch Walker
4. Jeff Buckley
5. a-ha
6. The Honorary Title
7. ROCKET
8. The Carpenters
9. Olivia Lufkin
10. They Might Be Giants
What was the first song you ever heard by 6 (The Honorary Title)?
Actually, I first heard of them at Butch Walker's concert. My first memory of them is Jarrod tuning the guitar about two feet from me, stopping only to sip some questionable substance from a plastic cup. I can't remember their set list D: But 'Everything I Once Had' really stuck in my head when they played it.
What is your favorite album of 2 (toad the wet sprocket)?
Oh, SNAP! I have no idea! fear holds a special place in my heart since it was my first toad album, but Dulcinea is brilliant. I plead the fifth. I can't choose! But I will be seeing them come January when they come to House of Blues. 12 fucking years since I last saw them! 12 FUCKING YEARS!!
What is your favorite lyric that 5 (a-ha) has sung?
That's really tough, too! a-ha has always had quirky lyrics. "We sit and watch umbrellas fly/I'm trying to keep my newspaper dry" from 'Manhattan Skyline' is simple but always gets stuck in my head. a-ha was my first SUPER-band. THE BAND I had to have everything by. I own most, if not all, of their albums on vinyl, cassette, and CD. Who's a geek now, eh??
How many times have you seen 4 (Jeff Buckley) live?
Actually, none. When i got into Jeff I was only 14 and unable to go to most concerts. Jeff died in '97 before finishing up his second album, so I've only seen live performances on DVD. I'm content with that for now. I love me some Jeff.
What is your favorite song by 7 (ROCKET)?
'Break-up Season', hands-down! It's so damn catchy! These chicks rock, and I am proud to say I knew of them BEFORE the Next Big Band shit on FOX. I do hope they do well, though--they're all really sweet (met them after Butch's concert in April).
What is a good memory you have involving the music of 10 (They Might Be Giants)?
I got Apollo 18 and Flood from my sister for Christmas one year (1993, I think), and I opened them up on Christmas Eve. We popped Apollo 18 in and 'Dig My Grave' came on, and my sister and my dad just started dancing around like idiots. I will always remember that.
Is there a song of 3 (Butch Walker) that makes you sad?
There's a few that don't like to listen to a lot. 'Dominoes' is one; it's about reminiscing about a lost loved one in old age. It reminds me of my grandparents.
What is your favorite lyric that 2 (toad) has sung?
The entire lyrics for 'Fly From Heaven.' I love that song! It's tough to pinpoint just ONE line since they have SO MANY songs, and I love all of them.
How did you get into 3 (Butch)?
Impulse buy! I saw 'Letters' for sale at a freakin' Wal-Mart, and while I didn't buy it right away, I went home and looked him up. Next time I went to Wally World, I bought it, and instantly loved it--and then realized that i head heard 'Mixtape' on the radio earlier that year. Butch rocks out so hard . . . he just oozes sex.
What is your favorite song by 4 (Jeff)?
It's playing right now, actually! 'Eternal Life.' The Zepplin-esque bit in there . . . the hard-rockin' guitar licks, 'Got my red glitter coffin . . . ' I sing along to this when nobody else is around, and someday I will be able to play it on my guitar. Someday.
What is a good memory you have involving 2 (toad)?
Getting an autograph from Glen made my life in junior high. I still have it! Also, seeing them live for the first time, even though we were in the nosebleed, 40th row at Polaris Amphitheatre . . . Randy came out first and the crowd screamed so damn loud! They played 'Fly From Heaven' first, and then did 'Brother,' I believe . . . so fuckin' awesome. I have to learn to stop cursing.
Is there a song of 8 (The Carpenters) that makes you sad?
Ooh. Good one. 'Solitaire' is pretty sad, but it's such a good song. Karen's vocals are amazing. A lot of the time, though, even when I'm listening to 'Top of the World,' I feel a bit sad since Karen died so young.
What is your favorite lyric that 3 (Butch) has sung?
I have several--"I better start a fight/overdose/date a model I suppose/Everything'll be alright" from 'Get Down,' 'So give me a razor/not to cut myself and talk about it/But to shave off your beard/You look better without it' from 'Ladies and Gentlemen . . . The Let's-Go-Out-Tonites!' A lot of Butch's lyrics are snarky and tongue-in-cheek. I love him for it.
What is your favorite song of 1 (My Chemical Romance)?
HEAVEN HELP US. Before I discovered that b-side, it was Helena. But Heaven Help Us speaks to me. 2:55 of pure . . . shit, I dunno . . . I play it on repeat constantly. Something about it clicked. I have a tattoo design incorporating the song title. And it will be on me this time next year.
How many times have you seen 8 (Carpenters) live?
None! Karen passed away when I was 2. But I do like to look up their stuff on YouTube.
What is your favorite album of 1 (MCR)?
Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, since it was my first purchase of theirs. Bullets . . . is great in an unrefined, sexy-gritty sort of way, and The Black Parade is a masterpiece . . . but Three Cheers screams 'Don't fuck with me!'
What is a great memory you have considering 9 (Olivia Lufkin)?
Only one question for 9? For shame! Olivia is great. I first heard of her through the NANA anime series. Her music reminds me of going to Japan and hearing it blast through the speakers in music and anime stores. She's just really good . . .
What is your favorite cover by 2 (toad)?
'Instant Karma!', originally done by John Lennon. It sounds like such a fun song to do!
So, now here's where I add stuff. If you are in need of new music, check some of these guys out.
MCR--for the rock set, download 'Heaven Help Us,' 'Helena,' 'Headfirst for Halos' (lots of H's . . .), 'You know what they do to guys like us in prison' . . . Oh, and their collab with The Used--'Under Pressure' is really good.
toad--'Fly From Heaven,' 'Fall Down,' 'Scenes from a Vinyl Recliner,' 'Come Down' . . . all great songs. Glen's solo songs are spifftacular, too--'Cleareyed,' 'Fred Meyers' . . .
Butch--'Suburbia,' 'Song Without a Chorus,''Since U Been Gone' (seriously!), '1 Summer Jam' . . . and see him live. You won't regret it.
Jeff--Jeff is a genius, and it's hard to choose just a handful of songs. For the ambitious, get Live at Sin-e (the 2-disc set) . . . for someone unsure, get Grace. Ten songs, originals and covers. Hell, I will buy it FOR you.
a-ha--Everyone knows 'Take On Me'! Try 'The Sun Always Shines on TV,' their cover of 'Crying in the Rain,' and 'Minor Earth, Major Sky.'
THT--For the acoustic, indie-rock hipsters, 'Everything I Once Had,' 'Soft, Pale and Pure,' 'Untouched and Intact' . . . once again, tough to choose just a handful!
ROCKET--Get the LP Girls with Candy Hearts to get a taste of their music. Punk-rock girls who spit water on you and sing groovy, kitschy tunes. You just can't lose!
Carpenters--'Superstar,' 'Only Yesterday,' 'It's Gonna Take Some Time,' 'Solitaire.' Those songs rock. (I like to freak people out by mentioning I have The Carpenters and MCR on my iPod.)
Olivia--it's easy to chekcf out her stuff by listening to some of the NANA themes, but iTunes has some of her regular solo stuff as well. 'WISH' is a good song, though, and so is 'Recorded Butterflies.'
TMBG--'Your Racist Friend,' 'Narrow Your Eyes,' 'I Palindrome I' are kick-ass! They have a TON of songs, though, so . . . . just buy a greatest hits album and you're set.
This has been brought to you by the robin is procrastinating from her comic association. Thank you for your time, and now back to your regularly scheduled white noise.
