Welcome to the official website of Abercynon RFC and to season 2008-09. While our 1st team

were relegated last time around there is optimism here, tinged with caution of course, that we

can mount a serious challenge in division 2 east of the National League. Gareth Turner, who

has returned to the Club from Cross Keys, has taken over the captaincy from his brother

Geraint who over the last two seasons has served us very well. A skillful, strong running

player, I can promise you that there will not be a dull moment with Gareth around whether it’s

on the playing field or elsewhere.

Club stalwart Neil Edwards is again our team manager and will be ably served by coaches

Geraint Kathrens, Peter Cummings and Robert Downes. Geraint has made over 300

appearances for the club and will continue to play this season. Peter is another long-server as

player and coach while Robert makes a welcome return to Abercynon where he has also

played and coached. There s no doubt that the incomparable Les Miles is viewed by the

players with respect and some trepidation. Once more, uncle Les is here to advise’ the

players with their fitness.

The second XV had a very successful season in 2006-07, winning their division by a landslide

and completing a notable double by regaining the Ifor Williams Cup. Both Darren Kathrens and

Mike ‘Shoulders Davies put a lot of effort in throughout the season while skipper Gareth Dixon

led the side with aplomb. Our first XV, while being the shop window of the Club, must often

rely on its reserve strength. From what I saw last season there are some gifted players on the

verge of a step up to 1st team rugby.

Last season saw the re-forming of our youth XV after a six year drought. Robbie Savage and

Jeff Pardoe nurtured a fine and successful team. They though, were always struggling for

numbers and our worse fears were founded when we were unable to field a team to continue

this time around. Nevertheless, I remain optimistic that the Youth will resume at some time

during the season. If there are any potential youth players reading this I would ask you to

contact Robbie or Jeff or ring the clubhouse to signal your interest.

Our President John Murphy (as seen on TV) would like to thank all our sponsors and

advertisers for their support of Abercynon R.F.C. The Club is always looking for new

sponsors and feel that it has a lot to offer especially on match day where an enjoyable

afternoon/evening is to be had by all. A good number of players, past and present will be

there to help things swing along.

We hope you enjoy ABERCYNON RFCs website - we will do our utmost to keep it updated as

regularly as possible. So step inside and click at your leisure. If you wish to use the

Guestbook please remember that your comments can be viewed worldwide so please refrain

from using bad language and be positive and concise.

Best wishes.

Graham Howells (Chairman).
