ABERCYNON V ABERGAVENNY
ABERCYNON V ABERGAVENNY
Abercynon v Abergavenny
Abercynon 20 Abergavenny 18
Having slipped up badly the previous week at Llantrisant Cynon were still looking for at least more victory with 3 games left to ensure that they could not mathematically be caught up in a relegation battle.Visitors Abergavenny were one of those sides who if they won their last 3 games could overtake Cynon.
Cynon kicked off on a glorious sunny afternoon and pressurised their opponents for first 10 mins taking a 6-0 lead with two penalties from Matthew Turner.Abergavenny struck back when on their first visit into Cynon's half Steve Lang dropped a goal and levelled matters on 20 mins with a well struck 40m penalty.Cynon's pack were now struggling to contain their opponents and were further hampered when on 25mins prop Gavin Moses was sent to the sin bin having committed two misdemeanours within a few minutes.Lang missed the resultant penalty and an easier one 5mins later.Half time arrived with honours even at 6-6.
The second half started with the visitors taking control.Within a few minutes had taken the lead when a well worked move which saw the visitors No 8 Paul Cornock appear in the centre position to take the ball and race through unopposed from 22 metres to score at the posts with the try converted by Lang to make the score 6-13.The visitors had their tails up and Cynon were having great difficulty in containing them and on 55 mins it was no surprise to see Abergavenny increase their lead.Cynon could not stop a rolling maul starting 25 metres out and impressive No 8 was on hand to crash over in the corner for an unconverted try for his second try of the game but was injured in the process and had to be replaced soon afterwards. However the visitors led 18-6 and at this stage looked to be the winners.Cynon were looking somewhat demoralised and disjointed. They needed a spark from somewhere and this came with 20 mins left.Cynon won a scrum in midfield on their opponents 22.Gareth Davies took a pass at speed from scrum half James Webster to round the covering defence to score in the left hand corner for a try superbly converted from touchline by Matthew Turner. This galvanised Cynon but Turner missed two penalties in quick succession to reduce the deficit. But there was no stopping Cynon and with 10mins to go replacement backrow forward Anthony Bowen weaved through from the halfway line to the 22 before passing to the other replacement backrow forward Corey Hearne to race unopposed to score in the right hand corner for a try again converted from the touchline by Matthew Turner. In the space of 10mins Cynon had turned the game on its head.
However a shocked Abergavenny redoubled their effort and spent most of the last 10mins camped on Cynon's line. However Cynon's defence repelled all attempts to score and finally relieved the siege with a penalty.
Mathematically Cynon need two more points to survive but it would still need the sides near the bottom to win all their remaining games.
