Primarily, my work is film based, in the form of installations. I do however experiment within the medium, also producing self contained films and using stills for photographic projects. I find the film making process really enjoyable and rewarding and have made documentary style films and music videos as well as those designed for installation.
Through my work, I deal with issues of identity, often in a voyeuristic way. I am interested in how we perceive ourselves as well as how we are seen by others. I often use different guises to represent the idea that within one individual there are many different identities. In altering my appearance, I can explore how my behavior in front of the camera alters when I am unrecognisable as myself. In asking others to dress in different guises I was able to record their behavior too.
My interest in self perception has led me to produce works using literal representations of mirrors. ‘Mirror’ 2006 is where a video of my head and shoulders is rear projected onto an ornately framed screen, (a customised 1950’s dressing table mirror) creating the illusion of a moving reflection.
In a recent film, ‘Mimic in Black’ 2006, I use a group of similarly dressed females who all mimic the movements and gestures of one individual. The effect of everyone moving in the same way can be read as a reference to following a trend or as all the individuals representing different sides to one person.
Much of the basis for my pieces stems from an interest in fashion. This becomes evident through the objects I use in my video installations. Coming from a sculptural background, the way I install my films is important to me. I like to give my films an extra dimension by incorporating them with objects on which I project.
The reference to Fashion in my work has led me to exhibit in the window of a leading boutique in Bath and I am pursuing further projects in this field.
