KCS Arts Support Group
Performances & Exhibitions

Scope of the Performances & Exhibitions Committee
Devoted to facilitating and improving all aspects of live performances and exhibitions in school (Spring & Fall Concerts, Talent Shows, Plays and Arts Exhibitions, etc.) and outside the school (NYSSMA, All-State, Forensics, etc.). Includes organizing and assisting with tasks required to prepare for performances and exhibitions, and facilitating practice sessions and other arrangements required to make these events happen.

Current Projects
Spring Musical Production - Kathy Recchia has generously offered to act as the producer for this event. By organizing, coordinating and facilitating the many tasks required to make this event happen, Kathy will allow others to focus on the artistic aspects of the program. We hope this will make for the best possible performance.

KCS Drama Club Fundraiser - This project involves the sale of flowers at the Spring Musical. All proceeds will be donated to the Drama Club. Hannah Smith and Pam Gothner organized and will implement this project.

Performances Task List and Timeline - This planning project involves detailing the tasks required to prepare for Winter/Holiday and Spring Concerts, and providing a timeline to assure they are completed in a logical sequence and in a timely manner, to allow adequate preparation time and to minimize eleventh hour pandemonium. The results of this one-time project will provide a blueprint to prepare for all future performances. This high-priority project is a collaborative effort including R.L. Stolz, Lynn DeWalt, Anne Hurd and Cynthia Ford-Johnston. This project was temporarily placed “on hold” because Kathy Recchia volunteered to manage the production of the Spring Musical. This project will need to be revisited in preparation for the Spring Concert.

Future & Ongoing Projects
Assistance With Installations For Art Exhibition - This project will involve providing labor to help move and display artwork for the annual art show at KCS, and exhibits at the Keene Valley Library. Please contact Cheryl MacFadden directly to offer your help.

Facilitate A Supervised Practice Program For Instrumental Students - This ongoing project will attempt to provide regular opportunities, and a conducive environment, for instrumental practice. We hope to facilitate practice for soloists, ensemble groups and bands. This project, identified as important by the music department, will require supervision by adults with some musical knowledge. Potential exists to involve some of the older student musicians as assistants. Scheduling could be before, during or after school. Initiation of this project is contingent upon the music department developing better accountability for student practice.

NYSSMA/All-State Coordinator - This ongoing project involves facilitating timely scheduling and applications for festivals and other events, interactions with NYSSMA and All-State personnel, and handling assorted administrative details associated with KCS students attending these important events. All musical aspects of these events will continue to be handled by the music department. Karen Stolz will act as coordinator for the above-described administrative functions.

Assist With Arrangements For Forensics Judges - KCS is expected to provide parent judges for these day-long tournaments. Training is provided for judges and the experience is very rewarding. KCS attends four to five events per year. Contact Joy McCabe directly to offer your assistance.

Provide Assistance Preparing For KCS Performances - This project includes assistances with set construction, costuming, program layout and printing, ushering, and child-care during the performance are among the many tasks that must be completed. This will be a repetitive project, with most tasks needing to be completed for every concert.

Completed Projects
Contribute Ideas For Concert Improvements - This project will explore ways in which the music department can make the most of the limited talent pool a small school like KCS has to offer. Organization, length, and content of performances have received considerable commentary and these aspects of concerts will be addressed. Goals would include better engaging the audience and generating a greater sense of accomplishment for the performers. Volunteers will work with the music department on this project.

The “Bob Andrews” Project - Bob has generously given of his time by attending music department rehearsals and classes on a regular basis since September 2006. He has assisted with instruction, arrangement and rehearsals directly. The time and talent required for this kind of effort is beyond what most volunteers can provide and we are especially grateful for Bob’s dedication.

Provided Assistance Preparing For The December 14, 2006 Winter Concert - This high-priority project includes completing all of the tasks that volunteers can assist with, as defined by the above project. Set construction, costuming, program layout and printing, ushering, and child-care during the performance are among the many tasks that must be completed. This will be a repetitive project, with most tasks needing to be completed for every concert.

Arranged For An Accompanist For The Music Department - Betsy Stinson has generously offered her services as an accompanist. Rehearsal schedule and other arrangements for the Spring Concert are pending. The music department declined this offer.

Encouraged Better Concert Etiquette - This one-time (we hope) project includes developing a small, printed insert for concert programs detailing appropriate (and inappropriate) behaviors for a concert environment. It also included a humorous pre-concert skit created by the music department and Bob Andrews. Emphasis was placed on encouraging the audience to respect the efforts of the performers by providing a non-disruptive environment.
