On November 20, 2004 in Santiago, Chile, President Bush attended a state dinner. When he entered, a member of his Secret Service detail was forcibly denied entry to the event. Bush unhesitatingly jumped right in and pulled him out of the scrum.
I make no bones about it. I like and respect President Bush, despite the numbers of people who detest him. This incident highlights why I think so highly of him. One of the tenets of leadership is to take care of the people under you. After watching this, you have to ask yourself: Would you ever see Carter, Clinton, Gore or Kerry ever do such a thing?
According to Gary Aldrich, Former FBI agent in charge of White House Security screening, Chelsea Clinton referred to the Secret Service agents who guard the President as “Trained Pigs”. When one of the agents explained to her that they were there to protect her and her parents, would give their lives to do so, and that it was inappropriate to call them that, she shrugged her shoulders and said “That’s what my parents call them.” This speaks volumes in the difference between President Bush and ex-President Clinton.
What President Bush did here was a quintessentially American thing to do. He took action, jumped right in on behalf of a man who was under his command.
