The Junior Marksmanship Program at HSC runs from the first Tuesday in October through the end of March. HSC has a 50 foot indoor range with a new ventilation system as well as a separate air gun range and classroom. Cost for the program is $25 for the season. The focus for the program is to teach the fundamentals of gun safety and to develop interest in competitive shooting. The NRA Marksmanship Program is used in order to foster an interest in competitive shooting. The program is used to develop skills in 3 position smallbore shooting. The club is also a competing member in the Maspenock Junior Rifle League. No equipment is required for the juniors as the club provides all the basics, but it is suggested that everyone bring their own eye and ear protection. A good place to shop for these items is Blue Northern Trading Company in Ayer, MA. In addition to the .22 rifles, the club utilizes air rifles and air pistol shooting which is used to refine marksmanship skills.
The program is largely funded through “Friends of NRA” grants. Over the last few years over $10,000 has been spent on the program through these grants. Click here for information on the Friends of NRA. The money is used to buy rifles, training equipment, shooting coats and other items necessary to run a quality program. If you ever get a chance to attend one of the dinners hosted by the Friends of NRA please do so, as they are lots of fun and you help programs like this one all over the State.
