These species, except for the Calliope Hummingbird, are common. The Calliope is an uncommon spring migrant. The Black-chinned Hummingbird is a common summer resident and breeding species. The Anna’s is the local default species, residing year-round in the wild and in urban settings. The popularity of hummingbird feeders and extensive plantings of winter-blooming flowers have made it possible for the birds to be year-long residents. Selasphorus Hummingbirds are two species, the Rufous and Allen’s. These two species are very similar and difficult to distinguish in the field.
